The size of a riser recliner chair and how well it fits the user is perhaps the most important consideration when looking to purchase. There are a lot of measurements to consider aside from just the overall and seat dimensions, such as the measurements of the backrest, seat height from floor, and the arm height. Whilst it is beneficial to try out a chair before you buy, finding a rise and recline chair that is the perfect fit is more than achievable if you assess comprehensive chair dimensions against the user’s body sizing.
Key chair measurements
Firstly, it is important that the supplier of the riser recliner chair provides you with comprehensive and detailed dimensions of the chair. The measurements you need to know are:
- Overall chair dimensions
- Seat width
- Seat depth
- Seat height (from floor)
- Backrest height (from seat)
- Armrest height (from seat)
The above measurements will give you a really good idea of the size of the chair. Ensuring the perfect fit
The depth of the seat on a riser recliner chair needs to support the full length of the thigh whilst leaving a small amount of room for comfort. Too short and the seat will increase localised pressure. Too long and the user will slide forward, causing postural problems. Ideally, when sitting on the chair, the user should have between 25mm (1″) and 50mm (2″) between the back of their legs and the chair. Compare the seat depth of the chair with the user by measuring the distance from the back of the user’s hips, along their thighs, and to approximately 25mm (1″) before the back of their knees.
The width of the seat needs to ensure the user is well supported whilst also providing enough room for the user to shuffle themselves slightly when in the chair. We recommend that you allow a gap of 15-25mm (around 3/4″) on either side of the user’s hips, this also ensures their arms sit comfortably on the armrests. Measure the user from one hip to another and compare this with the seat width of the chair.
The height of the seat is measured from the floor to the top of the seat. A higher seat improves the user’s ability to get in and out of the chair, but their feet must be flat on the floor to ensure good posture. The best way to gauge the correct seat height is by measuring the distance from the floor to the back of the knees.
The backrest of a riser recliner should support the user’s whole back, and when in a reclined position, their head as well. A backrest that is too short could result in the user’s head hanging over the backrest when it is fully reclined which means they will likely slide forward into a poor postural position. Measure the user from the lowest point of their back to the middle point of their head, and ideally the backrest should be the same height.
The height of armrests is measured from the top of the seat to the top of the armrests. The greater this height the more supportive the chair will be, but if it is too high neck and shoulder strain can occur. Low height armrests can be preferable for eating and using a laptop computer as they are less obtrusive. However, low armrests make it more difficult for the user to get out of the chair. Measure the distance of the armrest height on an existing chair that the user finds comfortable and find a riser recliner chair with similar armrest measurements to that.
